Protecting Our Industry, Securing Our Future
The Fight for Fair Freight Rates in Ontario
The trucking industry is the backbone of Ontario’s economy, yet foreign companies and unfair market practices continue to drive rates down, threatening our livelihoods. Local 76 Heavy Haulers is leading the charge to establish minimum freight rates in Ontario, ensuring truckers get paid fairly for their work.

Why OHHU Rate Standardization Matters
✅ Stops Foreign Undercutting – US-based firms and non-compliant operators are slashing rates, making it impossible for Ontario truckers to compete. A minimum freight rate ensures that only fair, legally compliant businesses operate in our province.
✅ Protects Truckers from Exploitation – Many owner-operators and small carriers are being forced to accept unreasonably low rates just to keep their trucks on the road. Standardized rates ensure that all drivers receive fair compensation for fuel, labor, and equipment costs.
✅ Improves Safety & Compliance – When rates are too low, truckers are forced to cut corners on maintenance, safety checks, and rest breaks just to make ends meet. A regulated rate system will keep unsafe operators out and ensure our roads remain safe.
✅ Boosts Ontario’s Economy – Fair freight rates will keep more money in the hands of Ontario workers and businesses, rather than being siphoned off by foreign operators and corporate brokers.
Local 76’s Plan to Protect Ontario Truckers
1. Pushing for Government Action
Local 76 is actively lobbying the Ontario Government, MTO, and industry regulators to introduce a minimum freight rate law that sets a fair baseline for all trucking contracts.
We are demanding:
🚛 A province-wide minimum rate per ton/km to stop unfair competition.
🚛 Stronger enforcement of trucking compliance laws to eliminate unsafe, cut-rate operators.
🚛 A “Local First” policy that prioritizes Ontario-based truckers for municipal and provincial contracts.
2. Enforcing Fair Pay in Private Contracts
We are pressuring freight brokers, logistics firms, and major clients to commit to paying fair rates. We will expose and blacklist companies that exploit truckers with below-market wages.
3. Uniting Truckers to Fight Back
The only way to win this battle is together. We are mobilizing Ontario’s truckers to:
🔹 Refuse unfairly low-paying loads.
🔹 Report companies engaging in predatory pricing.
🔹 Participate in protests, lobbying efforts, and public awareness campaigns.
